Yoast for Blogger: 8 Tips to Write SEO Friendly Posts

Below are some tips to write SEO friendly posts in Blogger that Yoast SEO plugin itself would suggest you.

1. It’s time to write a good title

Post title matters a lot in terms of healthy SEO. If you have added all the relevant keywords in the title that you want to rank for then there are huge chances for your Blogger post to rank on the top of SERPs. Search engines such as Google are designed in such a way so that the SERPs can only show up the first 50-60 characters of your post title, or as many characters that will fit into a 512-pixel display. This limit is not fixed. Sometimes Google highlights some keywords from your title according to the searched query and that also increases the width of the title.

For the titles with length more than the limit, Google removes some part of the title and adds three dots (…) at the end of it. So to be at the safe side, try to keep your title under 55 characters to ensure 95% chances for the proper title on SERPs.

If your blog title is set to show up at the end or starting of the post title then don’t forget to add those characters too to the posts title characters. Summation of both must be equal to or lesser than 60 characters.

You can use Characters Counter Tool to count your post title characters.

2. Set a Focus Keyword

Think of the focus keyword as the topic of your page or post. Focus keyword is what your post is all about. A good post doesn’t have multiple topics, it focuses only on one topic at a time. Focus keyword tells SERPs what exactly your post is all about.

Working around a particular keyword shouldn’t be an issue. But we’ve seen most people trying to add irrelevant keywords to their posts and then hope to rank the site for all of them. It’s not possible. Google’s ranking system works on the concept of ‘precision’. The more precise your post is (according to the search query), the higher your rank will be.

Optimizing a post for multiple keywords is detected as ‘spam’ by Google. So, try to optimize your pages for one keyword and do that well. But how? Very simple, choose a keyword which in the real sense describes your post the best. Focus keyword should be at most of 2 or 3 words. Avoid the use of any stop words in your focus keyword.

To make effective use of focus keyword from SEO Perspective, use the focus keyword at the following places:

  • Post Title (h1)
  • Article Heading (h2)
  • Page URL
  • At the beginning of the post (in the first paragraph)
  • In “alt” text of at least one of your post’s images
  • In between content and meta description

If you are writing an article about SEO then certainly the focus keyword is also “SEO” because it best describes your article. So your post’s title, heading, URL, content, and meta description much be involving the keyword “SEO”.

3. Write a short yet descriptive Meta description

Meta Description

Meta descriptions are HTML attributes that provide concise explanations of the contents of web pages. Meta descriptions are commonly used on search engine result pages (SERPs) to display preview snippets for a given page.

Meta description tags are not that important to rank on search engines because Google alters or changes the meta description on SERPs according to the user query. But meta description is extremely important in gaining high user click-through rates from SERPs.

These short paragraphs are a webmaster’s opportunity to advertise content to searchers and to let them know whether the given page contains the exact information they’re looking for or not.

The meta description should employ the focus keywords intelligently, but also create a compelling description that a searcher will want to click. Direct relevance to the page and uniqueness between each page’s meta description is key. The description should optimally be between 145-155 characters.

4. Meta Keywords

When search engines first emerged in the 90s, meta keywords were one of the primary components used by search engines to categorize and rank websites. As website developers realized this, many started “stuffing” meta keywords with popular search words and phrases, diluting their accuracy. As a result, search engines altered their algorithms to put less emphasis on meta keywords for SEO, but it’s unclear if they were removed from the algorithm entirely.

MSN and Yahoo may put more emphasis on meta keywords, but Google may no longer index them. However, even if you’re not actively running paid campaigns on MSN or Yahoo you still want your website to display in organic results. Further, meta keywords may still be a factor in Google’s Quality Score ranking.

5. Add some outbound links

If inbound links are very important from PageRank point of view, then outbound links also have their own importance. Adding outbound links to your posts doesn’t mean that you must link-up to bad neighbors. Search engines keep track of outbound links thus avoid linking to banned sites or bad blogs. Try to link-up with blogs having the same niche as your blog. This will help you to attract targeted visitors to your blog. Always add outbound links from the domains with good Moz rank and domain value.

6. Readability score matters a lot

Readability is about making your writing understandable and easy for targeted readers. It may not seem significant, but when you’re talking about online content, marketing to your audience is important. When a website’s content is clear, legible, and easily understood by your targeted audience, they will learn about your service or product, and in turn, search engines will favor the site and help it rank higher.

Search engines have always considered readability as an important ranking factor. Those who take care of readability ease will have an advantage. Remember, great content isn’t great unless it’s read and understood. Many blogs are accustomed to having precise and well-written content, unfortunately, sometimes the readers may not be as well versed and find the content hard to understand. Readability is calculated using Flesch Reading Ease Test.

To get better Readability scores, focus on the following points:

  • Don’t write long lines in a continuous tone without adding any break such as comma (,) full stop (.) or exclamation mark (!)
  • Don’t write a paragraph with more than 6-7 lines. Use a new paragraph for remaining content
  • Whenever possible, make use of ordered and unordered lists
  • Assign proper headings before each topic
  • Use bold, underline, italics, and different color styles to highlight content

7. Keyword Density is very Important

Keyword Density is the measurement of the number of times your keyword appears on the page of your article, versus the number of words on the page… a ratio of keywords and total content in other words.

Keyword Density is difficult to quantify! If you have an article with 1000 words of text and your keyword appears on that page 10 times, then your keyword density is 1 percent. To be very honest, we can’t tell you exact percentage or ratio of the keywords with total content. The safe percentage would be anywhere between 2% and 4%, not to exceed 7%.

8. Content length is a major role player

There is a fairly strong opinion among those considered experts in search engine optimization that both extremely short and extremely long web pages are not ranked as highly as pages that are of a reasonable length. Of course, no one really knows how many words are ideal – but the general opinion seems to be that a page of at least 300 words is probably a reasonable length. Similarly, many recommends keeping pages under 1000 words. We don’t entirely agree with that. Some of our articles with 1500+ words length are currently in top 3 positions in Google.

We don’t entirely agree with that. Some of our articles with 1500+ words length are currently in top 3 positions in Google. So, the best way would be to keep a relevant length of your content. Writing long posts just for the sake of stuffing it with keywords would be considered as spam.

Final Words!

SEO is a gradual process. You should not expect to get tons of traffic overnight even after following all the above given tips. But yeah it is for sure that hard work never fails. Keep focusing on writing valuable content that is worth reading.

If we talk about at most, then according to Matt Cutts, your external links per page should be under 1K. For more info you can check the complete article here: “How many links per page?” 🙂
